Samba 3.3.3: server software for Linux

New version of the server for sharing files on Windows under Linux. Changes to previous version, you can see here. The Samba 3.3.3 is a server software for Linux (and other Unix-based systems) that allows you to manage and share network resources with Windows computers. It is thus possible to use Linux as a file server, print server, among others, as if the network uses Windows servers (NT, 2000, XP, Server 2003). This article gives an introduction to Samba shows its main characteristics and some of its history.
A Short History of Samba
Samba 3.3.3 is a creation of Andrew Tridgell. According to information provided on the official website of the software, Tridgell needed to mount a disk space on your computer to a Unix server. The computer running the DOS operating system, was initially used by the file system NFS (Network File System) for access. However, an application needed to support the NetBIOS protocol (not supported by the NFS). The solution found for Tridgell was: wrote a sniffer (a small program to capture data traffic on the network) to analyze the data traffic generated by the NetBIOS protocol, made from reverse engineering the protocol SMB (Server Message Block) and as implemented in Unix. That made the Unix server appear as a file server on your Windows PC with DOS.
