Nearly 18 months after its previous version 4.4, it was assumed that their next major update 4.6 would arrive later this month. However, the project XFCE could not come to meet that goal and instead launched into place the first Alpha version of XFCE 4.6.

In this first Alpha should follow at least two more Betas in October and November, and then two more Release Candidates is that if the final version has possibilities of reaching the next December 21, as is planned now.

XFCE 4.6 will come with many new components, replacing some old and some other completely new, as detailed here. XFCE 4.6 also depend mainly on GTK + 2.10 and Glib 2.12, among others.
