Wine today announced the official launch by end of the final version 1.1.9 of the Wine project, the platform that enables running Windows applications on Unix-based systems, such as Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris or Mac OSX.

Already considered a date for releasing the first stable version of Wine, although in the end was delayed a few more days.

Wine is an acronym for Wine Is Not an Emulator, as the definition of the draft specifies that it is not an emulator but a reintroduction of the Win16 and Win32 API.

In addition to allowing to run applications written for Windows, Wine provides tools for porting code from one system to another.

Thanks to Wine users can run programs like Internet Explorer on Windows systems that are not very useful and necessary for example to developers of web pages.

It has also brought many games to the desktop GNU / Linux, as well as huge suites such as Adobe Photoshop.

The platform is free software and vital to many users who need to use a specific agenda that has only version for the operating system from Microsoft.
