Playing with OpenSuse 10.3
The install is not as easy as Ubuntu, and some of the preselected decisions are rather braindead. The GUI is lacking in some areas as Novell's idea of a start menu is naive and annoying for someone used to the traditional hierarchical application menus. Seriously, do they really think putting a search button that searches your data rather than your apps into the app launcher is a good idea?!?!Other than the usual set of bad OpenSuSe decisions, this thing is really slick! A few clicks enabled Compiz, which worked nicely on my ATI based laptop, and was almost as quick as Ubuntu (and the config tools for compiz are far nicer than those in Ubuntu).Overall, I am left with the impression of an unpolished set of apps behind a really great looking theme and overall look. I really wish Canonical would hire some of the SuSe graphics guys to clean up the Ubuntu look, as SuSe looks dramatically better.Anyway, it was just an experiment. I'm sure I'll be back in Ubuntu land shortly. :)
