Songbird 1.8.0 Final for Linux: Desktop Web player, a digital jukebox and Web browser mash-up
![]()
Songbird 1.8.0 Final for Linux is a desktop Web player, a digital jukebox and Web browser mash-up. Like Winamp, it supports extensions and skins feathers. Like Firefox, it is built from Mozilla ®, cross-platform and open source.
In view of the new release of Songbird, called NOFX, from the development team decided to discontinue the version for Linux. According to reports, it's been a while coming fall behind on versions for Windows and Mac - where they compete directly with iTunes - and since they are a small team need to focus mainly on support / add features.
For those unfamiliar with this player multi-platform (platform in the broadest sense: not only runs on Windows, Linux and Mac, but on various phones and MP3 players) is one of the best alternatives to iTunes within the free software . When he arrived, everything in it was innovative: it is based on Mozilla's XULRunner and the GStreamer multimedia framework, has a browser Integrate and its various plugins allow it to integrate perfectly with services like Last.FM, Twitter and Songkick.
Beyond this decision, argue that Songbird will remain free software (by providing all a mirror of the source code ) which will hold all the infrastructure, nightly builds and will continue running buildbot . The community response was immediate: within 24 hours, a student of computer science that has long contributed to Songbird decided to open his own fork. It was originally thought of the name Lyrebird , but after a couple of hours Nightingale was decided as the final name for this project . This is an excellent case where the free software community takes the post of a project when the original developers no longer can.
