Red Hat and AMD seem to have found the philosopher's stone of virtualization showing in this video how a virtual machine in operation can be migrated between different CPU architectures. Only a few months ago, ironically, Intel and VMWare had argued that something like this was impossible.

In the demonstration were able to migrate a virtual machine from a server Xeon E5420 Quad Core Intel-based server to another processor "Barcelona" from AMD, and then the new Opteron Quad Core "Shanghai". All this without interrupting the operation of the virtual machine (!).

Few details are known about this milestone so far, but given the recent commitment of Red Hat with KVM is very likely that the Free Software are playing a big role in this feat.
