Why Internet & Infrastructure Need to be Fields of Study

Submitted by linuxinet on Thu, 12/18/2008 - 20:16.
  • linux jurnal

The Internet is infrastructure. This should be plain, but it's not. The reason is that neither the Net nor infrastructure are well-understood, even though both could hardly be more widely used.

  • news flash

It's that time of the year again. No, not Christmas -- it's the time of the year we get the latest versions of our favorite Linux distributions. Version 11.1 of openSUSE is being released today. Designated as a point release, there are enough new goodies to warrant a new install or upgrade.

A Quick Look at Chandler

Submitted by linuxinet on Thu, 12/18/2008 - 17:48.
  • linux jurnal

Someone on the Seattle Linux List asked about Groupware and the usual suspects were suggested. One, however, I didn't know anything about. It is called Chandler. I figured it was worth looking at.

Multimedia support in OpenSuse 11.1 (MP3, MPEG-4, DiVX, etc.)

Submitted by linuxinet on Thu, 12/18/2008 - 13:49.
  • Linux poison

Why doesn’t OpenSuSe support MP3 ‘out of the box’?

OpenSuSe cannot include support for MP3 or DVD video playback or recording. MP3 formats are patented, and the patent holders have not provided the necessary licenses. OpenSuSe also excludes other multimedia software due to patent, copyright, or license restrictions, such as Adobe Flash Player and RealNetworks RealPlayer.
That doesn’t mean you

How to change the Mysql users and root password

Submitted by linuxinet on Thu, 12/18/2008 - 11:47.
  • Linux poison

There are two way to change the mysql user and root password

mysqladmin
If you have never set a root password for MySQL, the server does not require a password at all for connecting as root. To setup root password for first time, use mysqladmin command at shell prompt as follows:

$ mysqladmin -u root password NEWPASSWORD

However, if you want to change (or update) a root password, then you need

Wine suggested for the main repository of Ubuntu

Submitted by antoq on Thu, 12/18/2008 - 01:58.
  • Wine suggested Nesw

Scott Ritchie, a MOTU (Master of the Universe) of Ubuntu, proposed on the mailing list of developers of this distribution, which Wine, re API Win16 and Win32 for Unix-based operating systems, is included in the Main repository (principal) of Ubuntu, which would include practically anything in any default installation of this distribution.

The idea is that when people click on an executable file in Windows, a pop-up report on the possible actions and then be able to configure and run it with Wine.

Barracuda offers a new -- and free -- alternative to Spamhaus

Submitted by linuxinet on Wed, 12/17/2008 - 19:00.
  • news flash

For many years Spamhaus has been top dog in the anti-spam world of DNSBL (Domain Name System Block List; also known as Realtime Blackhole Lists or RBLs). But Spamhaus is no longer a 100% free service. Even small nonprofits are now expected to pay at least $250 per year for a subscription to the Spamhaus DNSBL Datafeed Service.
